Important New ICBC Changes
As of May 1, 2021, ICBC introduced significant changes to the BC vehicle insurance system, including the Enhanced Care model, which reduces premiums and shifts to a no-fault insurance approach with improved benefits for all injured parties.
ICBC Income Top Up
Under ICBC's Enhanced Care model, BC drivers can no longer sue for injury-related lost wages. Instead, ICBC provides income replacement up to 90% of your gross income, capped at $113,000 annually. If you or any of your drivers earn more than $113,000 per year, then we recommend you speak with us about ICBC's Income Top-Up Policy to cover income beyond this limit. Maximum coverage available for purchase is an additional $100,000 in coverage, for a total of $213,000 per year income.
Hit & Run Coverage Changes
Hit & Run coverage is no longer included in basic insurance. Most drivers are unaffected, as Collision coverage automatically includes Hit & Run protection with the same deductible. For those without Collision coverage, Hit & Run coverage can be purchased separately with a $750 deductible. Contact an agent with any questions.
Uber, Lyft, & Peer-to-Peer Rentals
If you use your vehicle for Uber, Lyft, food delivery (e.g., Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats), or rent it out on platforms like Turo, additional insurance may be required. We're here to ensure your vehicle is properly insured, protecting you in case of a claim.
Basic Insurance Requirements in BC
In order to legally drive a motor vehicle on a road or highway in British Columbia, every passenger and commercial vehicle must be insured with ICBC for a minimum of $200,000 in liability insurance. This means that if you were to cause an accident, any other party’s involved are covered up to $200,000 in damages.
This $200,000 is used only if you are at fault in the accident and it helps to cover the cost of other people’s bodily injuries, damage to other’s property or vehicles, and the cost of legal services.
In addition to third-party liability, ICBC's Basic Insurance coverage provides:
Optional Insurance Coverage
Basic insurance is mandatory to drive on BC highways, but it often provides limited protection. We recommend adding optional insurance to safeguard your personal assets in case of a major accident.
Optional coverage includes:
- Third-Party Liability: Limits from $300K to $5 million.
- Collision Coverage: Protects your vehicle after a crash.
- Comprehensive Coverage: Covers fire, theft, vandalism, and more.
Additional optional coverages are available, and we’d be happy to explore them with you in person.
How Do Deductibles Work?
A deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket when making an insurance claim.
For example:
- If your deductible is $300, you pay the first $300 of a collision claim.
- If your deductible is $1,000, you pay $1,000 before your insurance covers the rest.
Why Choose a Higher Deductible?
- Advantage: Lower monthly insurance premiums.
- Disadvantage: Higher out-of-pocket costs if you make a claim.
Deductibles help insurance companies reduce small claims and offer flexible pricing options to suit different budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions
To renew your ICBC insurance, simply bring your BC Drivers License into our office and we’ll take care of the rest.
At Peter Pook Insurance, we exclusively offer ICBC Autoplan insurance for cars and trucks. Many private insurers have exited the province following ICBC's shift to the Enhanced Care model. However, we do provide private insurance for motorcycles, off-road vehicles, travel trailers, and more — just not for cars and trucks.
In order to legally transfer vehicle ownership, the new buyer must be present in our office and bring the following 4 things:
- Government Issued Photo ID (2 pieces)
- Signed Transfer Paper (signed by seller & buyer)
- Signed Vehicle Registration (signed by seller)
- Payment Method (Void cheque for monthly payments, or credit, debit, cash, cheque)
Tax on all new and used cars is 12% if the sale value is under $55,000. If your new or used vehicle costs more than $55,000, then you will need to pay an additional ‘luxury tax’ that varies based on purchase price. Please refer to: https://www.icbc.com/brochures/pst-on-vehicles
Your ICBC Autoplan insurance covers you and your vehicle anywhere in Canada or the United States. Mexico and overseas countries are not covered.
